Single-phase track lighting installation

Installing 1-phase track lighting is a stylish and versatile way to illuminate your space. Whether you want to brighten your living room, kitchen, office, or shop, track lighting lets you create focused light accents and adjust the setup to your needs. In this guide, we’ll explain step-by-step how to install and connect 1-phase track lighting.
What is 1-phase track lighting?
1-phase track lighting means all the spots on the track are powered by the same electrical circuit. This means they switch on and off together. It’s ideal for residential use and smaller commercial spaces.
Tools and materials you’ll need
Before you begin, gather the following tools and components to make installation smooth and safe:
- 1-phase track
- Compatible track spots
- Power feed (connection piece)
- End caps
- Drill
- Wall plugs and screws
- Screwdriver
- Spirit level
- Electrical cables
- Wire stripper
- Voltage tester
Step-by-step installation guide
1. Preparation
- Switch off the power: Always turn off the power before working on any electrical installation.
- Determine the position: Choose the location for the track and make light pencil marks on the ceiling for the fixing points. Use a spirit level to ensure the track will hang straight.
2. Mounting the track
- Drill holes: Drill holes at the marked points and insert wall plugs.
- Secure the track: Screw the track firmly to the ceiling. Check with the spirit level that it is perfectly straight.
3. Connecting the power feed
- Connect the electrical cables: Strip the live (brown), neutral (blue), and, if present, earth (green-yellow) wires. Loosen the screw in the power feed’s connection box and connect the wires securely.
- Check the connection: Make sure the cables are firmly fixed. Use a voltage tester later to confirm the connection works once power is restored.
4. Connecting multiple tracks
- Use a connector: Slide the tracks into a straight or angled connector piece to join them.
- Secure tightly: Ensure the tracks are firmly locked into the connector.
5. Installing the spots
- Attach the spots: Slide the track spot into the rail and lock it by turning the fastening mechanism. Make sure it makes proper contact with the conductors.
- Adjust the direction: Position the spots to achieve the desired light angle.
6. Finishing
- Place end caps: Fit the end caps to finish the track neatly and safely.
- Restore power: Turn the electricity back on and check that all lights work correctly.
Tips for installing 1-phase track lighting
- Plan your lighting layout in advance to ensure the best light coverage.
- If installing in a kitchen or workspace, position spots to minimise shadows.
- Always double-check the power is off before handling wires.
