Outdoor lighting installation

Hate coming home in the dark? Outdoor wall lights are perfect for illuminating your front door—no more hunting for the keyhole—and they add beautiful curb appeal to your home. Bought an outdoor wall light but not sure how to mount it? Below you’ll find a clear, step-by-step guide to help you install it with ease.

Tools you’ll need

- Voltage tester
- Drill/driver
- Screwdriver
- Wire stripper
- Screws and wall plugs

Step-by-step installation guide

1. Switch off the power

Before you start mounting the lamp, switch off the power to the relevant circuit at the consumer unit (fuse box). Double-check with a voltage tester on the exposed conductors. If the tester does not light up, you can proceed safely.

2. Attach the mounting bracket

Remove the mounting bracket from the luminaire with a screwdriver. Using suitable wall plugs and screws, fix the bracket firmly to the wall at the desired height.

3. Connect the electrical wires

Make sure there is an electrical feed where you want to place the wall light (often forgotten!). You’ll typically see three conductors in different colours:
- Green/Yellow = earth (protective ground, use only for Class I fixtures)
- Blue = neutral (N)
- Black or Brown = live (L)

Strip about 0.5 cm of insulation from the live and neutral with the wire stripper (the earth wire only if required). The fixture’s terminal block (choc block) usually has two or three openings. Connect the earth to the centre terminal (if present). Connect blue and black/brown to the remaining terminals—it does not matter which side for live vs. neutral if the block isn’t polarised. Tighten securely.

4. Mount the fixture onto the wall

Slide the luminaire body over the bracket you just installed and secure it with the supplied screws—usually two small screws on the upstanding edges of the bracket. Ensure any gasket is seated correctly for weather protection.

5. Insert the light bulb and test

Fit a suitable bulb in the socket (bulbs are not always included). Restore power to the circuit and check the light. Congratulations—you’ve installed your outdoor wall light!

Tips for a neat, long-lasting installation

- Use outdoor-rated fittings and connectors: IP44+ (preferably IP54/IP65 for exposed locations).
- Seal cable entries and keep junctions protected from rain.
- Position lights to avoid glare and to highlight doors, paths, or architectural features.
- If you’re unsure about 230V wiring, hire a qualified electrician.
