How to mount a wall light

Mounting a wall light is a straightforward DIY project when you are well prepared. In this guide, we’ll walk you step-by-step through the process to safely and neatly install your wall lamp, giving your interior or exterior the perfect finishing touch.

Tools you’ll need

Before you start, gather all the tools and materials you need. This will make the process faster and easier. In many cases, you won’t need much, but check the full guide first to see if any additional tools are required.

- Voltage tester
- Wire stripper
- Screwdriver
- Screws and wall plugs (often included with the light)
- Drill with hammer function (optional, for masonry walls)
- Power screwdriver (optional)
- Pencil for marking
- Spirit level (to ensure the light is straight)

Step-by-step installation guide

1. Switch off the power

Turn off the power to the circuit where the wall light will be installed. Use a voltage tester to confirm there is no electricity in the wires. If the tester’s light doesn’t turn on, it’s safe to proceed.

2. Mark the mounting position

Hold the mounting bracket of the wall light against the wall where you want to install it. Use a pencil to mark the drill holes, ensuring the bracket is level with a spirit level.

3. Drill holes and insert plugs

Drill the holes in the marked positions. For brick or concrete walls, use a hammer drill and appropriate wall plugs. Insert the plugs securely into the holes.

4. Attach the mounting bracket

Secure the mounting bracket to the wall using screws and wall plugs. Make sure it is firmly fixed and perfectly level to ensure the light hangs straight.

5. Connect the wires

Strip about 0.5 cm of insulation from both the blue (neutral) and brown (live) wires using a wire stripper. Insert the wires into the terminal block – it doesn’t matter which side each wire goes into. If your wall light has a ground wire (green-yellow), connect it to the middle opening of the terminal block. Tighten all screws securely.

6. Secure the wall light fixture

Place the wall light fixture onto the mounting bracket and fasten it with the supplied screws or clips. This ensures the lamp is firmly attached to the wall.

7. Install the light bulb

Screw in the appropriate bulb as indicated on the fixture or packaging. You can find a wide range of suitable bulbs in our Lampgigant assortment. Once the bulb is in place, turn the power back on and test the light. Done!

What height should you mount a wall light?

The ideal height depends on the location and purpose of the light. Here are some general guidelines:

- In living rooms and bedrooms: Around 1.50–1.60 m from the floor to the centre of the light.
- In hallways: At least 1.80 m from the floor to avoid glare and head bumps.
- Beside a mirror: Position the centre of the fixture roughly at eye level, about 1.60 m from the floor.
- Outdoor wall lights: Usually 1.80–2.00 m from the ground for optimal light spread.

Tip: Temporarily hold the wall light at your desired height and check the appearance before final installation.
