How to install a ceiling light

Installing a ceiling light is a simple DIY task when you’re well prepared. In this guide, we walk you through five clear steps to mount it safely and neatly, so your fixture sits flush and secure.
Tools you’ll need
Gather everything in advance. Read the full guide first to see whether your situation requires any extra materials.
- Voltage tester
- Screwdriver (flat and Phillips)
- Drill (if needed)
- Wall plugs and screws
- Step stool or ladder
- The ceiling light and its manual
Step-by-step installation guide
1. Switch off the power
Safety first. Turn off the power to the correct circuit at your consumer unit/fuse box. If you’re unsure which group it is, switch off the main breaker. Use a voltage tester to confirm there is no power on the wires before you begin.
2. Mount the ceiling plate
Most ceiling lights include a mounting plate or bracket. Decide on the exact position and fix the plate firmly with suitable plugs and screws (use a drill if required). Ensure it’s secure—especially for heavier fixtures.
3. Connect the wiring
Connect the wires according to color:
Brown = live (L)
Blue = neutral (N)
Yellow/green = earth (if present)
Use a terminal block or WAGO connectors for a safe connection. If you’re in doubt about wiring, hire a qualified electrician.
4. Attach the fixture
Hook or screw the fixture onto the mounting plate as per the manual. Then install the correct light source in the socket.
5. Restore power and test
Turn the power back on at the fuse box and test whether the light operates correctly.
Tips for a clean finish
- Use the right plugs and screws for your ceiling type (concrete, plasterboard, or wood).
- Tuck the cables neatly behind the canopy or ceiling plate for a tidy result.
- Check load capacity: with plasterboard ceilings, solid anchoring is extra important.
- Always follow the included manual—each light can have a slightly different mounting method.
