How to cut an LED strip

Need to shorten your LED strip? It’s easier than you think! In this blog, we’ll guide you step-by-step through the process of safely and neatly cutting your LED strip to size — and even show you how to reuse the leftover section.
Tools you’ll need
Before you start, gather your tools to make the job quick and simple. For most LED strips, you won’t need much.
- Sharp scissors or a precision utility knife
- Measuring tape
- Marker or pencil
- Optional: LED strip connectors
- Optional: Soldering kit (for permanent reconnections)
Step-by-step guide to cutting LED strips
1. Measure and plan
Most LED strips are sold by the metre, but sometimes you end up with just a little too much. All Lampgigant LED strips have clear cutting points — usually every 5 or 10 cm. Measure exactly how long you need the strip to be, then mark the nearest cut line.
2. Locate the cutting line
Look for the scissor symbol or dashed line printed on the strip. These are the safe points to cut without damaging the circuit.
3. Make the cut
Using sharp scissors, cut exactly along the marked cut point. Cutting anywhere else can damage the strip and prevent it from working properly. Check where the power supply is connected before you cut to avoid mistakes.
4. Reuse the leftover strip (optional)
The cut-off section can often be reused! Simply connect it with a LED connector or a separate LED adapter, and you’ve got an extra strip ready to use in another spot.
Special note for waterproof LED strips
Shortening a waterproof LED strip works the same way — cut along the marked point — but keep in mind you will also cut through the silicone coating. This means the strip will no longer be fully waterproof at the cut edge.
For indoor use, this is usually not a problem. However, for wet areas or underwater use (like in aquariums), it’s better to buy the exact length you need. You can protect the cut edge with waterproof end caps or silicone sealant to improve moisture resistance.
Tips for best results
- Always cut at the indicated cut points.
- Double-check your measurement before cutting.
- For outdoor or bathroom use, reseal the cut end to maintain protection.
- Use connectors for easy reinstallation, or solder for a permanent fix.
