How to add a cord to a wall light
Adding a cord to a wall lamp is a practical DIY project if you want to plug your lamp into a wall socket instead of connecting it directly to the electrical wiring. This is especially useful for rented homes or spaces without an existing wall connection. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the process step-by-step so you can safely and neatly attach a cord to your wall light.
Tools & materials you’ll need
Before you start, gather all the necessary tools and materials to make the job easier. Read the full guide first to ensure you have everything you need.
- Wall lamp
- Suitable power cord with plug (preferably with an inline switch)
- Voltage tester
- Wire stripper
- Screwdriver
- Screws and wall plugs (if mounting the lamp)
- Optional: Drill with hammer function
- Power screwdriver
- Pencil for marking
Step-by-step guide
1. Switch off the power
Even if you’re not working directly on a mains connection, always make sure the lamp is disconnected from any power source before you start. Safety first!
2. Prepare the wall lamp
If your wall lamp already has a connection block for hardwiring, you’ll need to open it up. Remove any pre-installed wires if necessary, leaving the terminal block ready for the new cord.
3. Prepare the cord
Strip about 0.5 cm of insulation from the two wires (and the ground wire if present) inside the cord. Most cords have a brown (live), blue (neutral), and optionally a green-yellow (ground) wire.
4. Connect the cord to the lamp
Insert the stripped ends into the terminal block inside the lamp:
- Brown wire → “L” (live)
- Blue wire → “N” (neutral)
- Green-yellow wire → ground terminal (if the lamp is earthed)
Tighten the screws securely so there is no loose connection.
5. Secure the cable
Make sure the cord is firmly held in place using a strain relief or cable clamp inside the lamp to prevent it from pulling loose.
6. Mount the wall lamp
If you haven’t already mounted your wall lamp, attach it to the wall using screws and wall plugs. Use a spirit level to ensure it’s straight.
7. Test the lamp
Plug the cord into a wall socket and switch it on using the inline switch (or wall switch if applicable). Check that the lamp works correctly.
Extra tips
- Choose a cord length that allows comfortable placement near a socket without creating tripping hazards.
- Fabric-covered cords can add a decorative touch to your wall lamp.
- If you’re unsure about electrical wiring, consult a qualified electrician.
